“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.” (Acts 17:24-25)
God is completely self-sufficient, depending on nothing or no one outside of Himself. He contains all that He needs, and doesn’t receive anything that He hasn’t already given.
A.W. Tozer said, “Were all human beings suddenly to become blind, still the sun would shine by day and the stars by night, for these owe nothing to the millions who benefit by their light. So, were every man on earth to become atheist, it could not affect God in any way. He is what He is in Himself without regard to any other. To believe in Him adds nothing to His perfections; to doubt Him takes nothing away.”
God doesn’t need our service. He doesn’t need our worship. He doesn’t need us for anything. He takes an interest in us only because He chooses to. Do you comprehend how great this is? God, who needs no one has taken an active interest in my life and desires a relationship with me.
God delights in His creation even though there is nothing we can do to make Him any more than He already is. God may not need us but He created us in His image that we might glorify Him. How tragic that so many people live as though God needed them to accomplish His purposes. Whenever we do anything for God it is our privilege to serve Him. God is pleased by our efforts, but He doesn’t need it. He desires our worship but He is not dependent on it.
What should our response be? We should worship Him because He has chosen to give us life. We should worship Him for sustaining us every day, every breath we take is a gift from Him. We should worship Him for choosing to give us eternal life through Jesus Christ. We should worship Him for the countless blessings He chooses to shower upon us. We should worship Him because He alone is God.
Jesus said, “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” (John 4:23)
