Dear Peter, At a time when the divisions in our nation have been particularly stormy, I can’t help thinking of my father. I grew up in South Texas on the Gulf Coast, where my father managed the local grain elevator. All summer, we were intense weather watchers. If a hurricane looked like it was coming close, my father would do everything he could to batten down the grain elevator and our home. Then he would go into the bedroom and take a nap. Decades later, I finally asked him how he could sleep at a time like that. He answered, “Well, I knew what I could control and what I couldn’t. I knew what I could change and what I couldn’t, and I just prayed. And I was exhausted, so I went to sleep.” What we can control is how we will respond to the storms around us—with fear or with love. I believe that, like me, you’ve chosen love.
