Love: The Strength of a Mother’s Heart

Siblings in Christ,

This last Sunday in Advent we light the candle of Love, and our Scriptures paint a beautiful picture of strength, obedience, and the unwavering power of a mother's love. We journey with Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she navigates an extraordinary calling with remarkable courage and faith. Her story, interwoven with the prophecies of Micah and the teachings of Hebrews, reveals the profound strength that arises from a mother's love, a love that echoes the very heart of God.

Micah 5:2-5: The Humble Origins of Strength

Micah prophesies of a ruler from Bethlehem, a seemingly insignificant place, who will shepherd his people with the strength of the Lord. This ruler, Jesus, is born not in a palace but in a humble manger, highlighting that true strength is not found in worldly power or prestige, but in humility and obedience to God's will.

Mary, a young woman from a small town, embodies this humility. She accepts God's call to become the mother of Jesus, despite the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead. Her "yes" to God is an act of profound courage and trust, demonstrating the strength that comes from surrendering to a higher purpose.

Hebrews 10:5-10: Obedience Born of Love

The writer of Hebrews speaks of Jesus' obedience to God's will, even unto death. Jesus, fully human and fully divine, understands the weight of sacrifice. Yet, he willingly offers himself as the ultimate sacrifice, driven by his love for humanity and his desire to fulfill God's plan of salvation.

Mary's obedience mirrors that of her son. She embraces her role as the mother of Jesus, knowing it will lead to both immense joy and profound sorrow. Her love for her child empowers her to endure the trials and tribulations that come with her calling, demonstrating the strength that arises from a mother's unwavering love.

Luke 1:30-55: The Magnificat: A Mother's Song of Praise

Mary's Magnificat, a song of praise and thanksgiving, reveals the depth of her faith and the strength of her spirit. She rejoices in God's saving power, acknowledging his mercy and justice. Her words express a deep understanding of God's work in the world and her willingness to participate in his plan.

Mary's song is a testament to the strength that comes from a deep relationship with God. Her faith sustains her through uncertainty and fear, empowering her to embrace her role as the mother of Jesus with courage and grace.

The Strength of a Mother's Love:

Mary's story exemplifies the extraordinary strength of a mother's love. It is a love that is selfless, sacrificial, and unwavering. It is a love that empowers mothers to face challenges with courage, to endure hardships with grace, and to nurture their children with unwavering devotion.
