Changing Centers

Changing Centers

November 30

“Yet not My will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
In 1514, Nicolaus Copernicus started a revolution. His revolution did not involve political ideas or economic principles but rather the stars and planets. Prior to Copernicus, people believed the earth was the center of the universe. He argued, instead, our solar system was heliocentric, meaning the sun was at the center of the universe. His theory met with resistance from all walks of life, but supportive evidence eventually accumulated until the heliocentric view was accepted. Copernican’s “revolution” became the foundation for new insights into our solar system.

Many of us need a similar revolution. We need to remove ourselves from the center of our world and place God at the center. It is true we are created in the image of God and He loved us enough to give His Son’s life for us. However, our sinful nature tends to use these facts to lead us to the false conclusion that we are the main character in the story we are living.

A recent study found 74% of all images posted on Snapchat are selfies. Another study led by psychologist found the use of words and phrases such as “self,” “unique,” and “I come first” have risen in published writings in recent years. These, and other statistics, give evidence to many of us placing ourselves at the center of our own world.

But we are only part of the supporting cast. We were created to bring glory, honor and praise to God. He has the lead role. We are to have the same perspective as Jesus, reflected in today’s focal verse. It is not about us; It is about the Father. When we learn to place God at the center, having everything revolve around Him, a revolution will begin in which we will begin to discover deeper truths about the Christian life.

Question: What are some practical steps you can take to change your center?

Challenge: Take the time to make an honest inventory. Who or what is at the center of your world?

Prayer: Lord, help me to sincerely pray, “You must increase, I must decrease” (John 3:30).
