“I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong - that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.” (Romans 1:11-12) A winning team has the right players in the right positions. A healthy walk with Christ includes you surrounding yourself with the right people. Every one of us needs to have three important people in our lives. You need a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy.
You should have a Paul, an older man, who has followed Jesus for a long time, who is willing to build into your life. This person doesn’t need to be smarter than you, or even perfect, but certainly have a great deal of wisdom and experience about life that they can share with you.
We all need a Barnabas (See Acts 9-15), somebody who loves you, but is not impressed by you. You need somebody who is willing to speak truth to you, to have the ability to pull you aside and tell you that you are heading down the wrong path, that everybody else can see it, but they care enough to tell you.
And we all need a Timothy (See 1 and 2 Timothy), a younger man that you are intentionally building into. You most likely have had a more veteran teammate help you learn how to be a professional somewhere in your career. Spiritually, you can be that person for a younger man, mentoring them and praying for them as they learn what it means to vibrantly follow Jesus in a sometimes very hostile culture. Someone you can encourage, guide, and pray for.
Question: Of these three profiles, are there one, two, or even all of them that you need to add to your regular circle of relationships? Write down who those people are/would be in your life.
Challenge: Read these men’s profiles (scripture referenced above) for a better understanding of who they are.
Prayer: Lord, make me curious enough to learn from someone wiser. Make me humble enough to surround myself with someone who will be truthful with me. Make me bold enough to share what you have taught me with somebody who is walking in my footsteps.
