“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’
– Luke 15:17-19 (NIV)
Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Author of Making Sense of the Bible
Trying to control behavior can’t change the heart; a person must come to their senses before they will come back to their Heavenly Father. This is noteworthy because many people have been hurt by well meaning efforts to bring people to faith in Christ, but Jesus tells us that sometimes the wayward person needs to come to the end of their rope to realize their need for God. Once that happens they are willing to do anything to be reconciled.
