Just show up...
By Dr. Jim Kok, Crystal Cathedral Pastor
There is a common temptation that most of us experience when visiting someone in grief or pain - we want to fix the problem - to give a solution, a remedy, a scripture, or Biblical wisdom. Though there may be times in the future when these suggestions may encourage and help, there is a much better way to lift someone's heart at the height of their hurt.
Remember the old formula: "90% of Helping is Just Showing Up." The medicine everyone needs is love. Answers, fixes, solutions, and remedies may be politely received, but they seldom fit the moment and quite often actually hurt.
Show up! Act interested. Listen. Touch. Smile a little. Weep with those who weep. Rarely stay more than an hour (twenty minutes or less, if the person is sick). Listen. Listen. Listen.
Remember, God heals. Your presence, not your "fixing" words, is the love that they need. God will heal them. You show up.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when I know someone is in grief or pain, help me to be brave enough to just show up. Keep me from saying anything other than words of true empathy and love. Encourage me to leave the healing to you. Amen.
