This Week at Crossroads I 7.20.23

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

When we love something or someone, we are eager to talk about it. How often do we talk about Jesus and the things of God? If the answer is very little, maybe it is because we love the things of the world more. Many of us within the church have left our first love in pursuit of lesser things. Just before Jesus’ crucifixion, the Bible tells us that even Peter loses his love for Jesus as he denies him three times. Distraught and defeated, he and the disciples go back to fishing after Jesus’ death. When Jesus shows back up on the beach, Peter is quick to join him. Jesus reinstates Peter by asking him three times if he loves him. Jesus reminds him that their love for one another can be renewed. If we renew our love for God, it will play out in loving God’s people.

A CONVERSATION WITH REV. KEN WHEELER
Join the Grand Canyon Synod's Simeon Project as they host a conversation with Ret. ELCA Pastor Ken Wheeler regarding his book "US: The Resurrection of American Terror." This heart-wrenching yet stubbornly hopeful narrative, exposes white supremacy as America's greatest threat. Transcending the boundaries of memoir, scholarship, theology, and sharp political critique, Pastor Wheeler takes readers on his own seven-decade-long journey that lays bare the terror of being Black in America. From his childhood in Jackson, Mississippi under the trauma of Jim Crow segregation to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Wheeler steadily holds a mirror up to a nation drowning in a rising tide of white supremacy.

MAKE LIFE BETTER
TEACHER SUPPLY DRIVEI SUNDAY, JULY 30
We know school's out for summer!  Most AZ schools will resume in July.  According to AdoptAClassroom.org, teachers spend an average of $750 of their own money on school supplies. Many teachers spend even more, with 30% spending $1,000 out of their own pocket each school year on supplies for their own classrooms.  Crossroads will collect school supplies for teachers in FUSD to support their 2023-2024 school year.  Supply list will be available in July.  For more information contact Nicole Crombie.

ASU MOVE-IN DAY
Saturday, August 12
Make life better serving as a volunteer at ASU Polytechnic campus move in day.  We have two opportunities this year.  Volunteers help make the process as smooth as possible, unload cars and moving belongings to rooms, keeping spirits up with the cheers and applause , and helping families through what can often be an emotional day.  If moving doesn't sound like your cup of tea, join us as as we spruce up the Agape Ministry House at Poly.  Both students and families have reacted favorably to how effective this move-in process works.
