Some of you attended my recent GOAL SETTING WORKSHOP webinar. For those that didn't, I’d like to invite you to participate now in this very important exercise! Get a journal or notepad & how about we do some dreaming & creating!
Let’s pause for a sec & REMEMBER that everything around you in your life right now once started out as just a thought, a desire, an inspired moment. Through exercising your mind with a goal setting session, you now have the power to take your current thoughts and turn them into a tangible, promising future. To create your compelling future! Let's build the life of your dreams! Let’s come up with some BIG goals that will drive & inspire you! Goals with some power behind them. After all, goals are just dreams with deadlines.
If you were not able to participate in the recent webinar, why not go back & watch it!? Either way, I invite you to do this exercise NOW & to create a compelling exciting future for your life! As you approach this exercise, be sure to put yourself in a positive, peak state. Have absolute faith and expectation that you can create anything you want in your life. Be enthusiastic! Be ambitious! Reach for the outer limits of what you believe you can achieve in one year! Stretch!
Here is a basic goal setting formula with 4 STEPS you can use to set 3 types of Goals:
Personal Development Goals
‘Thing’ Goals
Financial Goals
This week we will focus just on #1 - Personal Development Goals! (In the following weeks we will focus on “Thing Goals” & on Financial Goals).
SO LET’S START WITH OUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS! (This will take about 15-20 minutes)
I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE; WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO? WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO CREATE IN YOUR LIFE? WHAT WOULD BE SOME SKILLS YOU’D WANT TO ACQUIRE? WHAT WOULD BE SOME ABILITIES YOU WOULD LIKE TO CULTIVATE? WHAT ARE SOME CHARACTER TRAITS YOU WOULD LIKE TO DEVELOP? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO MASTER? (Maybe you’d like to become a black belt in Shotokan Karate! Maybe you’d like to get a pilot’s license, or learn to play guitar, or run a marathon…etc…)!
UNDER Personal Development goals are ALSO CAREER GOALS. What are SOME GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CAREER? WHAT ARE SOME CAREER-RELATED THINGS YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH? I WANT YOU TO WRITE FOR at least 6 STRAIGHT MINUTES – EVERYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT WOULD BE A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOAL FOR YOU! GET CREATIVE, GET PLAYFUL! GET OUTRAGEOUS – get an unlimited mindset & just write! (you can get practical later!) Right now I just want you to dream like a little kid – remove all fetters from the mind & just let it soar as it was divinely designed to do! I WANT YOU TO COME FROM A FRAME OF REFERENCE THAT ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DEVELOP IN YOUR LIFE – ANYTHING YOU WANT TO DEVELOP WITHIN YOURSELF – ANY PLACE YOU’D LIKE TO GO – ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO DO OR BE – In the next 1 to 20 years - You can indeed accomplish! So let’s WRITE it DOWN NOW!
Some examples of ‘Personal Development Goals’
GOAL #1 – (example) Learn a new skill (like Public Speaking, or Organic Gardening, Scuba Diving, fly-fishing…etc…)
GOAL #2 – (example) Learn a Foreign Language
GOAL #3 – (example) Travel to Prague, Paris, Turku & Dubrovnik
GOAL #4 - (example) Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
STEP 1:
Put yourself in a state of mind of absolute and total faith - and absolute expectation that you can create anything or make anything happen that you want. Give yourself about 6 minutes to brainstorm a list of anything you’d like to achieve, create, do, have, give, and/or experience in the next 20 years.
BEGIN NOW! Write as many things down as fast as you can in this time and keep your pen moving…!
STEP 2:
OK, NOW THAT YOU’VE GOT THIS LIST – GO THROUGH EACH OF THE GOALS - & ITS IMPORTANT TO PUT A TIMELINE ON IT! IT’S BEEN SAID THAT GOALS ARE NOTHING BUT DREAMS WITH A DEADLINE! SO EVEN THOUGH YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW “HOW” YET – I WANT YOU TO GET A SENSE OF YOUR PRIORITIES OF IMPORTANCE, SIMPLY BY GOING THROUGH THE LIST. NEXT TO EACH OF THESE GOALS - I WANT U TO WRITE A TIMELINE OF WHEN U WILL ACCOMPLISH IT BY –
SO PUT A 1 NEXT TO IT IF IT'S SOMETHING YOUR COMMITTED TO ACCOMPLISHING IN 1 YEAR OR LESS.
PUT A 3 NEXT TO IT IF IT'S SOMETHING YOUR COMMITTED TO ACCOMPLISHING IN 3 YEARS OR LESS.
A 5 FOR 5 YEARS OR LESS
10 FOR 10 YEARS OR LESS
OR 20 FOR 20 YEARS OR LESS
GIVE YOURSELF A MINUTE TO DO THAT – LETS DO THAT NOW!
REMEMBER – YOU MAY NOT KNOW “HOW” YOU’RE GOING TO ACCOMPLISH IT & THAT’S OK – JUST FIND OUT WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU & PUT A TIMELINE ON IT NOW.
STEP 3:
SO NOW, THE NEXT STEP IS – I WANT YOU TO GO THROUGH THIS LIST OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS, & I WANT U TO SELECT THE TOP 3 ONE YEAR GOALS YOU’VE GOT. SO LOOK AT ALL THE ONES YOU WROTE DOWN THAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN ONE YEAR OR LESS - & PICK 3 OF THEM THAT REALLY COMPEL YOU – THAT WOULD REALLY GET YOU EXCITED – PICK THE TOP 3 & CIRCLE THEM WITH YOUR PEN! 3 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS THAT YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY COMMITTED TO ACCOMPLISHING WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR! PICK THOSE OUT RIGHT NOW! GIVE YOURSELF ABOUT 30-60 SECONDS…
STEP 4:
OK! Now that you havethe top 3 one year goals selected, I WANT YOU TO WRITE one paragraph for each one as to WHY YOU ARE absolutely committed to HAVING THESE THINGS BE IN YOUR LIFE WITHIN 1 YEAR!
AGAIN, YOU’RE GOING TO PICK YOUR TOP THREE ONE YEAR GOALS - & WRITE ONE PARAGRAPH NEXT TO EACH AS TO WHY YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY COMMITTED TO HAVING THESE BE IN YOUR LIFE WITHIN 1 YEAR!
GO FOR IT NOW! GIVE YOURSELF 5 MINUTES – QUICKLY!
REMEMBER ON THIS – PURPOSE IS STRONGER THAN OBJECT SO KNOW WHYYOU WANT TO DO OR HAVE THESE THINGS! IT'S NOT JUST TO HAVE THE THINGS, IT’S THE FEELINGS YOU THINK YOU’LL GET FROM THEM! WHAT WILL IT MEAN? WHAT WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SHARE? WHAT FUN WILL IT CREATE FOR YOU?
