The Promises of the Medal   When Our Lady visited St. Catherine Labouré on November 27th, 1830, rays of light flowed from the rings (made of precious stones) on her fingers. However, some of the stones on the rings did not shine.   Mary explained: "These rays symbolize graces I shed upon those who ask for them. The gems from which rays do not fall are the graces for which souls forget to ask."   Mary then spoke of the medal she was requesting with these words:   "All who wear it will receive great graces; they should wear it around the neck. Graces will abound for persons who wear it with confidence."   The medal is a visible sign of the wearer's devotion to Mary and to her Son, Jesus. Making the Miraculous Medal     Catherine Laboure, a nun of the Sisters of Charity in Paris, had been at the convent for a mere six months when her incredible visions began happening. At 11:30 PM on July 18th, 1830, Catherine was asleep when she heard a voice speaking to her. She woke up to see a little boy with blue eyes and golden hair whom she recognized as her guardian angel. He led her to the chapel, where Our Lady appeared and sat in a chair near the altar. She was wearing a white dress with a blue veil. At the urging of her angel, Catherine ran to Mary and knelt before her.   She rested her hands in Mary's lap and looked up into her eyes as she listened to her speak. The Blessed Mother told Catherine that God had a special task for her to do. This was the image that Mary wanted on the medal that she was requesting. And with the help of her spiritual director, Fr. Aladel, Catherine set to work.
