Entering the Weekend with Christ

Hi everyone,

As we enter this weekend with Christ, we are called to look for and to embrace the subtle signs of Christ's love in our broken world.  Let us seek God, and may we live our lives as signs of God's grace to a world in need...and may we all "make our own little sign, and say I thank you Lord for thinking about me", for this is Jesus as The Bread of Life.

Signs: Sustenance and Salvation

Siblings in Christ, we find ourselves today at a crossroads of faith and every day life, where the tangible and the spiritual intersect. Our biblical passages from Exodus, Ephesians, and John present us with accounts of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness, the early church's pursuit of unity, and Jesus' discourse on the Bread of Life. In each, we encounter the theme of signs - tangible manifestations of a deeper spiritual reality.

Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15: Bread from Heaven: The Israelites, weary and hungry in the desert, demanded bread from Moses. God responded with manna, a miraculous provision. This event serves as a profound sign. The manna was a physical sustenance, a tangible answer to a tangible need. Yet, its deeper significance lies in its representation of God's provision, His constant care for His people.

Ephesians 4:1-16: Unity as a Sign: Paul exhorts the Ephesians to maintain the unity of the Spirit. This unity is not merely a social construct; it is a spiritual reality, a reflection of the Trinity. It is a sign to the world of the transforming power of the Gospel. When the Body of Christ is united, it displays the love of God in a tangible way. It is a beacon of hope in a divided world.

John 6:24-35: Jesus, the Bread of Life: Jesus declares Himself the Bread of Life. This is a profound spiritual truth. Yet, the people sought a tangible sign, a physical manifestation of this claim. They wanted bread, like the manna. Jesus responds by emphasizing the spiritual nature of His provision. True life comes not from physical bread but from believing in Him.

As we navigate our own spiritual journeys, we too encounter signs. Challenges, blessings, relationships – all can serve as signs pointing us to God. But like the Israelites, we often seek tangible evidence, immediate gratification.

Our challenge is to see beyond the sign, to recognize the deeper spiritual reality it represents. To find salvation through Jesus, not just in the provision of food. To pursue unity not for its own sake, but as a reflection of God's love. To believe in Jesus, not just for the miracles He performed, but for the eternal life He offers.

Let us embrace the signs, but let us never lose sight of the salvation we have through Jesus Christ. Let us seek God, the source of all good things, rather than fixating on the gifts He gives. May we live our lives as signs of God's grace to a world in need.

In the end, the journey of faith is not about collecting signs but about deepening our relationship with the Signifier. It's about recognizing the tangible manifestations of God's love in our lives and responding with gratitude, faith, and obedience.
